Integrated remote sensing and GIS techniques for biogeochemical characterization of the Tinto-Odiel estuary system, SW Spain
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Tinto-Odiel estuary area in SW Spain presents a high concentration of industrial, agricultural and mining activities that seriously affect water quality, producing significant concentrations in trace metals and other contaminant elements. Previous studies have highlighted the important environmental effect of these contaminated waters discharged into the Gulf of Cadiz, contributing in a marked way to trace-metal concentrations in the Mediterranean Sea by water inflow through the Strait of Gibraltar. A global biogeochemical characterization of these waters was the main objective of a multidisciplinary research study funded by the European Union, in which remote sensing and GIS techniques, among other methodologies, were jointly applied. The main results confirmed the usefulness of this integrated methodological approach as an effective tool for the assessment of current biogeochemical conditions. Digital image processing provided valuable thematic information for temporal hydrodynamic analysis and water quality parameters mapping, which was integrated into a GIS database together with experimental information sampled in oceanographic cruises.

Application of fuzzy logic and data mining techniques as tools for qualitative interpretation of acid mine drainage processes
In this article, a set of clustering algorithms based on Fuzzy Logic and Data Mining are applied, allowing to obtain data in the form of linguistic rules and charts about the behaviour of the Tinto and Odiel river estuary (SW Spain) affected by Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). In order to provide researchers with no skills on data mining techniques an easy and intuitive interpretation, we have develop...
متن کاملGroundwater potentiality through Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) using remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS)
Nowadays the use of remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) is one of the most powerful cost effective tools to identify and discover the available groundwater resources. In this paper, Lithological Units, Lineaments, Slope, Topography, Drainage density, Vegetation and Isohyets lines have been achieved by stations and through remote sensing and GIS techniques. All layers of diffe...
متن کاملFeasibility study on ecotourism potential areas using remote sensing and geographic information system (case study: abbasabad forest area, veresk, iran)
Ecotourism as the most attractive subset of the tourism industry can contribute to natural resource conservation and local development. Although great numbers of people annually visit Abbasabad area, in Veresk, Mazandaran, to enjoy its brilliant landscape and moderate ecologic condition, there is no applicable plan for many natural attractive zones in this area. As a result, some specific well ...
متن کاملCharacterisation of heavy metal discharge into the Ria of Huelva.
The Ria of Huelva estuary, in SW Spain, is known to be one of the most heavy metal contaminated estuaries in the world. River contribution to the estuary of dissolved Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr, Ni, Cd, and As were analysed for the period 1988-2001. The obtained mean values show that this contribution, both because of the magnitude of total metals (895.1 kg/h), composition, toxicity (8.7 kg/h of As+Cd+Pb) ...
متن کاملIdentification of Groundwater Potential Zones in Moalleman, Iran by Remote Sensing and Index Overlay Technique in GIS
Water plays a vital role in the development of activities in an area. The surface water resources are inadequate to fulfill the water demand. Productivity through groundwater is quite high as compared to surface water, but groundwater resources have not yet been properly exploited. Keeping this view, the present study attempts to select and delineate various groundwater potential zones for the ...
